New York City is a stronghold of the Democratic Party, a place where Republicans usually come for cash, not votes. Even though Republicans have held City Hall for 11 years, that perception hasn't changed. Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 5-1 in New York City, and officials are bracing for protests when the Republicans hold their national convention here Aug. 30 to Sept. 2. Even the building where President Bush will be nominated, Madison Square Garden, takes its name from President James Madison, a founder of what is now the Democratic Party.
